Ask a Lawyer Day 2012

Good morning.

Once again, many communities around North Carolina will be holding an annual “Ask a Lawyer Day” event in an effort to bring much needed legal services and information to those in their community who would not otherwise have access to legal assistance.  Wilmington area attorneys participated in this event in 2010 and 2011 with great success, providing free legal services to hundreds of people in the community, and the feedback was excellent.  Many of you receiving this email participated in the event over the past two years, and I hope you will consider helping again this year.

“Ask a Lawyer Day” is a Young Lawyers Division project consisting of lawyers volunteering their time to consult with members of the general public.  The volunteer attorneys will staff tables in a public place and discuss general legal questions with the public.  The focus is not on giving specific legal advice or representation, but on giving suggestions as to how problems might be solved.  It is an excellent opportunity to not only provide a valuable and much needed public service but also to project a positive image of the legal profession as a whole, to educate the general public about our legal system and to give young lawyers practical experience in counseling clients.

This year we will be holding the event on February 4, 2012 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Independence Mall.  We are asking attorneys to volunteer their time in two hours shifts.  All attorneys are welcome no matter their area of practice or level of experience.  To assist the volunteers in working with participants, we will be providing a collection of resource materials including a handbook with answers to frequently asked questions commonly encountered in these types of events, such as domestic law, landlord-tenant, employment law, and so forth.

If you are interested in volunteering, please respond to this email with the following information:

1.  Your name and contact information

2.  Your area of practice

3.  Your first and second choice for the following shifts:  10:00 to 12:00, 12:00 to 2:00, 2:00 to 4:00, and 4:00 to 6:00.

Please be sure to circulate this email to other attorneys in your firm.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
